Google Docs Voice Typing: How to Use It (and What It Can't Do)
Google Docs has free built-in voice typing — great for quick drafts inside a document. Below is exactly how to turn it on and dictate accurately, its real limits, and a private, offline alternative that works in every app.
How to use voice typing in Google Docs
Voice typing is built into Google Docs and Google Slides speaker notes. You need the Chrome browser and a microphone. Here are the four steps.
Open Google Docs in Chrome
Voice typing only works in the Google Chrome browser. Open (or create) a document at docs.google.com.
Open the Voice typing tool
Go to Tools → Voice typing, or use the shortcut Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows/Linux or Cmd+Shift+S on Mac. A small microphone box appears on the left of your document.
Grant microphone permission
The first time, Chrome asks to use your microphone. Click Allow. If you accidentally blocked it, re-enable it from the site settings padlock in the address bar.
Click the microphone and speak
Click the mic once — it turns red to show it's listening. Speak clearly at a natural pace and your words appear at the cursor. Click the mic again (or say 'Stop listening') when you're done.
Shortcut: Press Ctrl+Shift+S (Windows/Linux) or Cmd+Shift+S (Mac) to open and close the voice typing box instantly.
Voice commands for punctuation
Google Docs voice typing does not add punctuation automatically — you say each mark out loud. These are the most useful commands (supported in English and a handful of other languages).
| Say | Result |
|---|---|
| "Period" | Inserts . |
| "Comma" | Inserts , |
| "Question mark" | Inserts ? |
| "Exclamation point" | Inserts ! |
| "New line" | Moves to the next line |
| "New paragraph" | Starts a new paragraph |
| "Colon" / "Semicolon" | Inserts : or ; |
| "Open quote" / "Close quote" | Inserts quotation marks |
You can also say "Go to end of line", "Select paragraph", and other navigation commands — though these can be hit-or-miss. Voice typing supports dictation in a wide range of languages, but the command set (punctuation, formatting, navigation) is more limited and mostly works in English.
The limits of Google Docs voice typing
It's genuinely useful for a quick draft — but honest about where it stops:
Chrome only
Voice typing does not work in Safari, Firefox, or Edge. If you don't use Chrome, it's unavailable.
Requires internet — audio goes to the cloud
Your voice is streamed to Google's servers for transcription. No connection means no dictation, and your audio leaves your device.
Only works inside Google Docs
You can't use it in Gmail, Slack, a code editor, Word, or anywhere else. It's locked to Docs and Slides speaker notes.
Manual punctuation, limited accuracy
You have to speak every comma and period, and accuracy drops with accents, background noise, or technical vocabulary.
Stops when the tab loses focus
Click another tab or window and voice typing silently stops — you have to click the mic again to resume.
Whisper: dictation that stays on your device
Whisper is a desktop dictation app that runs the speech model entirely on your own machine. Press a hotkey, speak, and it types at your cursor in any app — with punctuation and capitalization added automatically. No internet, no upload, no subscription.
100% on-device & offline
Audio never leaves your machine and there are no subprocessors. Works fully offline — ideal for confidential, legal, and medical work.
Fast & automatic
GPU-accelerated (Metal/Vulkan) — about an hour of audio in a minute on Apple Silicon, with punctuation and capitalization done for you.
Works in every app
Not just Google Docs. Dictate into Gmail, Slack, Word, your editor, or any text field on Mac, Windows, or Linux.
Whisper also transcribes audio files — drop in a WAV, MP3, FLAC, M4A, AAC, or OGG and get a full transcript, all offline. Read more on the security & privacy page.

- Code editors and terminals
- Notion, Obsidian, and note apps
- Any text field on Mac, Windows, or Linux

Google Docs voice typing FAQ
How do I turn on voice typing in Google Docs?
Open a document in Google Docs using the Chrome browser, then go to Tools → Voice typing, or press Ctrl+Shift+S (Windows/Linux) or Cmd+Shift+S (Mac). A microphone box appears. Click the mic once (grant microphone permission if asked) and start speaking — your words appear at the cursor. Click the mic again to stop.
Why isn't Google Docs voice typing working?
The most common causes: you're not using Google Chrome (voice typing only works in Chrome, not Safari, Firefox, or Edge), the browser doesn't have microphone permission, the Google Docs tab lost focus (voice typing stops if you click another tab or window), or you have no internet connection. Voice typing needs an active connection because your audio is processed by Google's cloud servers.
Does Google Docs voice typing work offline?
No. Google Docs voice typing sends your audio to Google's servers for processing, so it requires an active internet connection. If you go offline, dictation stops working. For fully offline dictation, you need an on-device app like Whisper, which runs the speech model locally on your own machine.
Can I use voice typing outside of Google Docs?
Google's built-in voice typing only works inside Google Docs and Google Slides speaker notes — not in Gmail, Slack, your code editor, or any other app. To dictate everywhere, you need a system-wide dictation app. Whisper types at your cursor in any application: press a hotkey, speak, and the text appears wherever you are typing.
What's the best alternative to Google Docs voice typing?
Whisper is a desktop dictation app that works in any application, not just Google Docs. It runs 100% on your device — no internet required, and your audio never leaves your machine. It adds punctuation and capitalization automatically, is GPU-accelerated for speed, and is a one-time purchase instead of a subscription. It runs on Mac (Apple Silicon), Windows 10/11, and Linux.
Is Google Docs voice typing private?
Google Docs voice typing transmits your spoken audio to Google's cloud for transcription, so your voice leaves your device. If you handle confidential, legal, medical, or otherwise sensitive material, that may be a concern. Whisper transcribes entirely on-device with no audio upload and no subprocessors, so nothing you dictate ever leaves your computer.
