We read every price at the vendor's own page on 8 September 2026, and where a vendor publishes nothing we say so rather than repeat a guess.
Our pick is Whisper, because privileged audio never leaves the machine it was recorded on, and because $29 a year with no auto-renewal beats a per-seat subscription that renews for as long as the firm exists. Philips SpeechLive is the better buy if you run a real dictate-and-typist workflow. We explain both.
One question decides this purchase
Every other feature is a preference. This one is a risk decision, and your firm has to be able to answer it in a client due-diligence questionnaire.
The audio stays on the device
Whisper, Speecher, superwhisper and MacWhisper transcribe locally. There is no processor to contract with, no sub-processor list to keep current, and nothing for a third party to be compelled to produce. It also works with the network off.
The audio goes to a server
Philips SpeechLive, Dragon Copilot, Otter.ai, Rev and Wispr Flow process on their own infrastructure. That is a legitimate model with real benefits, and it makes the vendor a supplier you must diligence, contract with, and be able to name.

What is the best dictation software for lawyers in 2026?
If the deciding factor is client confidentiality, pick a tool that never transmits the recording. Whisper runs the speech model on the solicitor's or attorney's own machine, so the audio and the transcript stay on that device, and it costs $29 a year for the first seat plus $15 a year for each additional seat, with no auto-renewal. If instead you need a full dictate-and-typist workflow with hardware, a job queue and a secretarial pool, Philips SpeechLive is built for that and publishes $12.90 to $17.90 per user per month with speech recognition as a $25.90 add-on. Those are two different firms and two different purchases.
Does dictation software breach client confidentiality?
The software does not decide that. Your duty does, and the question it turns on is simple: does the recording leave your control? A cloud dictation tool sends privileged audio to a third-party processor. That can be acceptable, but it becomes a supplier you have to diligence, contract with, and disclose, and it widens the set of people who could be compelled or breached. A tool that transcribes on the device does not create that supplier at all. We are not your regulator and this is not legal advice, but that is the question your risk partner will ask first.
Can I use Otter.ai or Rev for privileged material?
Both process your audio on their servers, so the decision is a supplier decision, not a feature decision. Read what each actually commits to. Otter.ai lists HIPAA only as an add-on on its Enterprise plan. Rev describes itself as CJIS and HIPAA compliant on the Unlimited plan, and separately sells human transcription at $1.99 per minute and legal transcripts at $2.25 to $2.50 per page. Human transcription means a person reads your privileged recording. For some work that is exactly right, because you need a certified transcript. For a first draft of an attendance note it is a large and unnecessary exposure.
What happened to Dragon Legal?
Microsoft completed its acquisition of Nuance in 2022. On 8 September 2026 the old Dragon Professional page on nuance.com returned a 301 redirect to microsoft.com/health-solutions, and Microsoft's Dragon Copilot page publishes no price. Firms that standardised on Dragon a decade ago are the ones asking this question, and the practical answer is that you can no longer cost the incumbent without contacting sales.
Does dictation software work offline in court or in a client meeting?
On-device tools do. Whisper transcribes with the network disabled, which matters in a courtroom with no signal, in a prison visit room, and on a locked-down machine. Speecher also runs locally, for 4.99 EUR per month. Every cloud tool on this page needs a connection, because the transcription happens on somebody else's computer.
What does dictation cost a whole firm?
Compare over the retainer period, not the month. Twenty fee earners on a $17.90 per user per month plan is $4,296 a year before the speech recognition add-on, and it recurs. Twenty seats of Whisper is $314 a year, with no auto-renewal. If your firm already licences a dictation workflow with hardware and typists, that comparison is not fair and we will not pretend it is. If your firm simply wants people to stop typing their own notes, it is the whole argument.

- Dragon (Nuance / Microsoft) — The old Dragon Professional product URL on nuance.com returned a 301 redirect to microsoft.com/health-solutions on the read date. The Dragon Copilot page publishes no price and offers migration from Dragon Medical One.
- superwhisper — The pricing block is rendered by script and did not resolve to a readable price string on the read date. The site does state: "Intel Macs work best with Cloud models. Offline models only run really well on Apple Silicon macs."
