Whisper for Therapists
Almost every tool sold to therapists right now works the same way: it records the session and sends it to a server so an AI can write the note. That is a real product with real benefits, and it is also a recording of a therapy session sitting on somebody else's computer. Whisper does something narrower and quieter. You dictate the note yourself, afterwards, and the words are typed on your own machine.
No session is recorded. No audio and no transcript is transmitted to us. There is nothing for us to retain, share, or be compelled to produce, because we never receive it. $29 a year for the first seat, $15 for each additional seat.
Why a practice buys this rather than a scribe
Nothing is recorded
An ambient scribe needs a recording of the session to work. Whisper does not listen to sessions at all. You speak your note when you are ready, which keeps the consent conversation with your client where it was.
No monthly line per clinician
Per-seat note tools run from roughly $20 to $120 per clinician per month. Ten clinicians at $69 a month is $8,280 a year, every year. Ten seats of Whisper is $164 a year, with no auto-renewal.
You keep the clinical voice
A generated note reads like a generated note, and you still have to check every line for accuracy before it enters the record. Dictation keeps your own clinical language and your own judgement in the note.
It works everywhere you already work
Whisper types into whatever has your cursor: your EHR, a Word document, an encrypted email, a secure portal. There is no integration for your practice management vendor to approve.

These are the questions a supervisor, an insurer or a group practice asks before approving software. We give the short answer, including where the honest answer is that the responsibility is yours.
Where is the audio processed?
On the clinician's own computer. The speech model runs locally. Audio does not reach us at any point.
Do you store recordings or transcripts?
No. We never receive them, so there is nothing to store, no retention period to configure, and no deletion request to process.
Do we need a Business Associate Agreement with you?
Not for the transcription step, because no Protected Health Information is disclosed to us. We are not a business associate for that processing. If your policy requires an agreement with every vendor regardless, tell us and we will talk it through rather than send you a template that misdescribes what we do.
Who are your sub-processors for the transcription?
There are none. That is the whole architectural point. For billing and licensing we use ordinary business vendors, and those are named on the security page.
Does it work without internet?
Yes. Dictation works with the network disabled. A connection is needed only for download, licence checks and updates.
Is Whisper HIPAA compliant?
No software is, and any vendor that says otherwise is overselling. HIPAA binds your practice. What we can say precisely is that a tool which transmits nothing removes one vendor from the set of things you have to make compliant. You still have to secure the device, control access, and train your staff.

What a group practice pays
One licence covers Mac, Windows and Linux. The price is flat per seat per year and nothing renews automatically: ten seats are $164 a year, or $492 over three years, and you decide each year whether to renew. For a practice with a managed IT setup, the installers support silent deployment; the detail is on the enterprise deployment page, including what we do not offer, which is a management console.

Questions therapists ask
Is dictating a note the same as recording a client?
No, and the distinction matters for consent. Recording a session captures your client's voice and words. Dictating a note captures yours, usually after the session has ended. The consent questions around the two are different, and your professional body and jurisdiction decide what each one requires. We are a software vendor, not your regulator. The narrow point we can make is that with on-device dictation no third party ever holds either recording.
Should I use an AI scribe instead?
If the thing eating your evenings is writing the note from memory, a scribe removes more of that work than dictation does, and Mentalyc, Upheal and Blueprint are built specifically for therapy. We compare them honestly on our HIPAA page, including prices we read at their own sites. If what you actually want is to stop typing while keeping your own words and keeping the audio off the internet, that is what Whisper does, and it costs a fraction as much.
Can I dictate directly into my EHR?
Yes, in the sense that matters: Whisper types wherever your cursor is, so it works in a web-based EHR, a desktop one, a letter or an email. What it does not do is push structured data into named fields or apply billing codes. If you need that, you need an integration, and Whisper is not one.
How accurate is it with clinical language?
Clinical and psychological terminology comes through well, and there is no voice training step to complete first. Where it will need help is your own abbreviations and any local shorthand, which no tool knows in advance.
What happens if my laptop is lost?
The same thing that happens to every other file on it, which is why device security is the part you own. Full-disk encryption, a strong login and remote wipe are the controls that matter here. We cannot help you recover a note, because we never had it, and that is the trade in both directions.
