Is There a VoiceInk for Windows? Options and Alternatives (2026)

Short answer: The original VoiceInk, the open-source dictation app by Pax at tryvoiceink.com, is for Mac (Apple Silicon) and iOS. Its site does not list Windows. A different app with the same name, at voice-ink.com from Pixel Drift LLC, runs on Windows 10, Windows 11 and macOS. Its free tier is offline with 20 transcriptions a day, and its Pro tier uses Deepgram's cloud. If you want unlimited offline dictation on Windows or Linux, Whisper is a paid alternative at $39 a year that runs all transcription on your own computer.

Facts below come from each vendor's own site, read on 27 October 2026.

The two VoiceInks and Whisper at a glance

Platforms macOS 14.4+ on Apple Silicon, iOS Windows 10, Windows 11, macOS Mac (Apple Silicon), Windows 10/11, Linux
Price One-time: $25 (1 Mac), $39 (2 Macs), $49 (3 Macs) Free; Pro $9/month or $50/year $39 a year, $29 a year per extra device

Cloud Optional "Cloud Enhancement" for text only Pro streams audio to Deepgram None
Limits None stated Free: 20 transcriptions per day None
Source code public Yes Not stated Paid, ready-to-use app

Is the Windows VoiceInk the same app as the Mac VoiceInk?

No evidence says so. The Windows app's site credits "Pixel Drift LLC" and does not mention Pax or tryvoiceink.com. The Mac app's site credits Pax and links to the source at github.com/beingpax/VoiceInk. Treat them as two separate products from two separate makers.

What does the Windows VoiceInk offer?

From voice-ink.com on 27 October 2026:

  • Free: "20 transcriptions per day, fully offline using Whisper AI." Its FAQ says the free tier "works in airplane mode, on a local network, or with no signal at all."
  • Pro: $9 a month, or $50 a year. Pro gives "Unlimited transcriptions with live real-time streaming via Deepgram." That means Pro audio goes to a cloud service.

So on Windows you choose between a daily cap that stays offline, or no cap with cloud processing.

Why choose Whisper on Windows?

Whisper removes that trade-off. It has no daily cap and no cloud mode.

  • All transcription runs on your computer. No audio and no transcript is sent to us.
  • Works offline after the first model download.
  • Types at your cursor in any Windows app. Default hotkey: Ctrl+Space.
  • 99+ languages with automatic detection.
  • Custom word lists for names and terms.
  • Transcribes audio files (WAV, MP3, FLAC, M4A, AAC, OGG).
  • Also runs on Linux and on Apple Silicon Macs, so one tool covers a mixed setup.
  • $39 a year. Yearly licence that renews automatically. Cancel any time.

When is the original VoiceInk the better choice?

If you only use an Apple Silicon Mac, the original VoiceInk is a strong option. It is open source, it runs locally, and it is a one-time purchase from $25. If those three things matter most to you and you never need Windows or Linux, buy it.

Whisper makes more sense when you also work on Windows or Linux, or when you want one app on all of your computers.

How do I move from VoiceInk to Whisper?

  1. Buy a licence at get-whisper.com. The key arrives by email.
  2. Install Whisper on Windows, Mac or Linux and enter the key.
  3. Download a speech model once. After that, dictation works offline.
  4. Copy your custom words from VoiceInk into Whisper's word list.
  5. Pick a hotkey that does not clash with VoiceInk, or quit VoiceInk first.
