Willow Voice Alternative: Private, Offline Dictation for $39 a Year (2026)

Short answer: If you want a Willow Voice alternative where your voice never leaves your computer, use Whisper. Whisper is a desktop dictation app for Mac, Windows and Linux. All transcription runs on your device, it works with no internet, it needs no account, and it costs $39 a year. Willow runs dictation on cloud servers in the United States by default, with a free plan and a Pro plan at $12 per user per month on annual billing.

Willow facts below come from Willow's own pricing, home and security pages, read on 27 October 2026.

Willow Voice vs Whisper at a glance

Willow Voice Whisper
Free plan Yes ("Frontier Mini" model, 20 Scribe uses per week) No
Paid price Pro $12/user/month on annual billing, $15 monthly; Business $28/$35 $39 a year
Extra devices or users Priced per user $29 a year for each extra device
Platforms Mac, Windows, iPhone; Android "coming soon" Mac (Apple Silicon), Windows 10/11, Linux

Offline Offline mode listed on the homepage Yes, always
Account needed Yes No, a licence key only

Willow's pricing page shows "$15 $12" next to a Monthly/Annual toggle marked "Save 20%". We read $12 as the annual rate and $15 as the monthly rate.

Why do people look for a Willow Voice alternative?

  1. The audio goes to the cloud. Willow's security page says "Willow runs on secure cloud infrastructure in the United States." For some work, such as client notes, patient details or unreleased plans, any upload is one too many.
  2. Price per year. Willow Pro is $144 a year on annual billing ($12 x 12) or $180 a year monthly. Whisper is $39 a year.
  3. Linux. Willow lists Mac, iOS and Windows. Whisper also runs on Linux.

To be fair to Willow: its security page says Privacy Mode is on by default, "No audio is stored after transcription", and transcripts are "not logged server-side or retained by default." The difference is where the work happens. With Willow the audio is sent and then deleted. With Whisper the audio is never sent.

Does Willow Voice work offline?

Willow's homepage lists an "Offline mode" and says you can "Dictate without an internet connection, powered entirely by your device." The pricing and security pages do not say which plans or platforms include it, or which model it uses. If offline use matters to you, check with Willow before you buy.

Whisper has only one mode. Every word is transcribed on your computer, online or offline. There is no cloud model to switch to.

How does Whisper work?

  1. Press the hotkey (Option+Space on Mac, Ctrl+Space on Windows and Linux).
  2. Speak.
  3. The text appears where your cursor is, in any app.

Other facts:

  • 99+ languages with automatic detection.
  • Custom word lists for names and terms.
  • Transcribes audio files (WAV, MP3, FLAC, M4A, AAC, OGG).
  • A connection is only needed to download the app, check the licence and get updates.
  • Yearly licence that renews automatically. Cancel any time.

When is Willow the better choice?

  • You dictate on iPhone. Willow has an iPhone app. Whisper is desktop only.
  • You want a free plan to start. Willow has one. Whisper does not.
  • Your company needs SOC 2 and a signed DPA. Willow's homepage says it is "SOC 2 Type II certified and HIPAA compliant," and the pricing page lists an MSA and DPA for Enterprise. Whisper holds no SOC 2 certification. Because Whisper sends no audio to us, there is no processing by us to put under a DPA.
  • You want style learning. Willow Pro lists "Smart memory of your writing style." Whisper types what you say, with your word list applied.

When is Whisper the better choice?

  • You want zero audio upload, not upload-then-delete.
  • You work offline often, or on a network that blocks cloud apps.
  • You use Linux.
  • You want a fixed yearly price per device instead of a per-user monthly plan.
